The Vista class cruise ships were built between 2002 and 2005 for Holland America Line and are known for their elegant design with the popular Explorations Café. Carnival Vista completed a thirty-day refurbishment that combined scheduled shipyard work with substantial passenger-area improvements. The ship received Carnival's red, white and blue hull livery and a Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge replacing SkyBox Sports Bar. The casino was expanded and reconfigured, with the former Club O2 location becoming a non-smoking annex. Club O2 moved into the previous arcade space, and the arcade relocated to the former Thrill Theater. Cherry on Top and Carnival Adventures were established on Deck 4, and a Dreams Studio was added on Deck 3. Retail spaces and the Lido Marketplace were refreshed, the miniature-golf layout was revised, the outdoor children's playground became Fun Yard, and the Carnival Multiplex entrance moved to Deck 7. The ship returned to Port Canaveral following the project.

Carnival Vista underwent an emergency propulsion repair at Grand Bahama Shipyard using Boskalis' semi-submersible heavy-lift vessel BOKA Vanguard as a temporary floating dry dock. In a first-of-its-kind operation for a cruise ship, Vista was loaded onto and lifted completely out of the water by BOKA Vanguard, then transported to the shipyard while remaining supported on the vessel. The project allowed technicians to repair the ship's malfunctioning Azipod propulsion system, including replacement of bearings, after conventional large dry-dock capacity at Grand Bahama Shipyard had been rendered unavailable by an earlier crane accident.
