A cruise has more moving parts than many other vacations. In addition to packing, you may need to complete online check-in, confirm travel documents, schedule transportation, reserve excursions, review dress codes, notify your bank, print luggage tags, and prepare your carry-on bag before embarkation day.

Cruise Packing Tips

1. Keep Important Documents With You
   • Never Check Important Documents: Keep passports, government-issued IDs, boarding passes, cruise documents, vaccination records when required, travel insurance information, and purchase confirmations with you during the boarding process.
   • Use Printed Backups: Mobile apps are convenient, but phones can lose power, internet access can be unreliable, and screens can break. Carry printed copies of your most important travel documents as a backup.
   • Secure Documents Onboard: Once you are onboard and settled, place passports, IDs, and important documents in your cabin safe. In most cases, your cruise-issued card or wearable device is all you will need while moving around the ship.
   • Keep Everything Together: A travel document wallet can help keep passports, boarding passes, hotel confirmations, transportation details, and other essentials organized in one place.
2. Cruise Carry-On or Checked Luggage?
   • Pack For The First Few Hours: Your checked luggage may not arrive at your cabin until late afternoon or evening. Anything you may need before then should go in your carry-on bag.
   • Carry-On Essentials: Pack passports, IDs, cruise documents, credit cards, cash, medications, valuables, electronics, chargers, swimwear, sunscreen, glasses, contacts, and a change of clothes in your carry-on.
   • Medication Safety: Never place prescriptions or essential medical items in checked luggage. Bags can be delayed, misplaced, or held by security for inspection.
   • Families With Children: Parents should carry diapers, wipes, bottles, snacks, comfort items, medications, swimsuits, and anything their child may need during the first several hours onboard.
   • Valuables: Cameras, jewelry, laptops, tablets, passports, and other valuables should remain with you until they can be secured in your cabin safe.
3. Be Aware Of Dress Codes
   • Every Cruise Line Is Different: Dress codes vary widely. Some cruise lines are very casual, while others still expect jackets, cocktail dresses, or formal attire on certain evenings.
   • Formal Nights: Many cruises include one or more formal, elegant, gala, or dress-your-best evenings. Review your cruise line's current dress code before packing.
   • Dining Room Rules: Main dining rooms and specialty restaurants may restrict swimwear, tank tops, flip-flops, shorts, or distressed clothing during dinner service.
   • Theme Nights: Some cruise lines feature theme nights, white parties, pirate nights, Scarlet Night, tropical nights, or other special events. Packing one or two simple theme-friendly items can help you participate without overpacking.
   • Pack For Your Actual Cruise: A Caribbean family cruise, Alaska cruise, European river cruise, and Cunard Transatlantic Crossing may all require very different clothing. Let your cruise line, destination, and itinerary guide your packing choices.
4. Toiletries
   • Cabin Basics: Most cruise cabins provide basic soap, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, but quality and selection vary by cruise line and ship.
   • Bring Preferred Products: If you are particular about hair care, skin care, shaving products, sunscreen, or other toiletries, bring your own instead of relying on what is provided onboard.
   • Medication & First Aid: Pack basic over-the-counter medications, seasickness remedies, bandages, pain relievers, stomach medicine, allergy medication, and any personal health items you may need.
   • Air Travel: If flying to your cruise, remember that liquids, gels, creams, and aerosols in your carry-on must follow TSA or local airport security rules.

5. Avoid Overpacking
   • Pack With A Plan: One of the most common mistakes first-time cruisers make is bringing far more clothing than they actually wear. Plan outfits around your itinerary instead of packing for every possible situation.
   • Mix & Match Clothing: Choose clothing that coordinates well together so individual items can be worn multiple times in different combinations without packing an entirely new outfit for every day.
   • Leave Room For Souvenirs: Whether you purchase clothing, artwork, local crafts, or gifts, you'll likely return home with more than you brought. Leaving extra space—or packing a foldable duffle bag—can make the trip home much easier.
   • Check Your Cruise Length: Longer cruises don't always require proportionally more clothing. Laundry services are available on most ships and can significantly reduce the amount you need to pack.
6. Laundry Services
   • Available On Most Ships: Nearly every cruise ship offers laundry service, although the options vary by cruise line.
   • Self-Service vs. Full Service: Some ships provide self-service laundromats, while others offer only crew-operated wash-and-fold, pressing, or dry-cleaning services.
   • Watch For Specials: Many cruise lines offer discounted laundry promotions during longer sailings, often around the middle of the cruise.
   • Pack Less: If you plan to use onboard laundry services, especially on cruises lasting a week or longer, you may be able to reduce the amount of clothing you bring.
7. Cruise Cabin Essentials
   • Power Outlets: Many cruise cabins, particularly on older ships, have a limited number of electrical outlets. A cruise-approved USB charging station or non-surge protected power strip can make charging multiple devices much easier.
   • Over-The-Counter Medications: Pain relievers, seasickness remedies, antacids, cold medicine, allergy medication, and other common items are usually available onboard, but selection is limited and prices are often significantly higher than at home.
   • Sun Protection: Sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, sunglasses, and a hat are essential for many cruise destinations, particularly in tropical climates where replacing these items onboard can be expensive.
   • Reusable Water Bottle: A reusable water bottle is useful during shore excursions and can help you stay hydrated throughout your vacation.
   • Small Convenience Items: Magnetic hooks, luggage tags, insulated tumblers, waterproof phone pouches, and collapsible laundry bags are inexpensive accessories many experienced cruisers find surprisingly useful.
8. Air Travel Regulations
   • Know The Rules: If you're flying to your cruise, review the baggage regulations for every airline and country you'll be traveling through before packing.
   • TSA 3-1-1 Liquids Rule: In the United States, liquids, gels, creams, and aerosols carried through airport security must generally be in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 mL) or less and fit inside one clear, quart-sized bag per traveler.
   • Checked Baggage: Larger containers may generally be packed in checked luggage, subject to airline and destination restrictions.
   • Medical & Child Care Exceptions: Prescription medications, medically necessary liquids, breast milk, baby formula, and certain other essential items may qualify for exemptions. Review current TSA or local airport security guidance before traveling.
   • International Travel: Security regulations vary by country. If your itinerary includes international flights before or after your cruise, verify the requirements for each airport you'll pass through.
