The former Viking Sun underwent a lengthy shipyard modernization and rebranding period at Yiu Lian's Shenzhen facility from April 15 through September 29, 2021, in connection with its transfer to the China Merchants-Viking joint venture.

During the transition, the vessel was renamed Zhao Shang Yi Dun, transferred to the Chinese flag and prepared for domestic luxury cruise service from Shenzhen. The renamed ship began operating from Shenzhen on October 1, 2021.

The vessel, then operating as Viking Sun, underwent repair, maintenance and upgrade work at Harland & Wolff in Belfast during two stays: June 23-July 1 and July 14-August 29, 2020. The ship left Belfast between the two periods before returning to continue the project.
