Norwegian Star Dry Dock History

Previous Dry Dock
October 21, 2024 - November 11, 2024
Shipyard
Damen Shiprepair Brest
Duration
22 days
Norwegian Star underwent an extensive technical dry dock at Damen Shiprepair Brest in France. The project included replacement of an approximately 80-ton stabilizer manufactured by Fouré Lagadec, requiring significant hull modifications to remove and install the equipment. Both Azipod propulsion units were dismantled for replacement of rotation bearings and other components. Two bow thrusters underwent detailed inspections and servicing, while the third was scheduled for replacement. Additional work included hull valve maintenance, classification inspections, hull cleaning, repairs, and repainting. The three-week project focused on major propulsion, maneuverability, and stabilization system maintenance rather than extensive passenger-area refurbishment. The ship returned to passenger service in Southampton on November 12.

Staterooms and suites were refreshed with new carpeting, furnishings and USB charging ports, while restaurants, bars, lounges and other public areas were renovated. The project introduced Sky High Bar, Bliss Ultra Lounge and the adults-only Spice H2O and included routine technical and maintenance work.

Passenger-area improvements included renovations to the casino, photo gallery, pool deck, and galley facilities, replacement of carpeting, flooring, and windows, and installation of interactive digital signage. Technical work included Azipod propulsion upgrades, bow thruster and stabilizer maintenance, replacement of ballast and bilge piping, upgrades to lifeboat and tender release systems, and application of fuel-efficient silicone hull coating.

Shipyard
Seaspan Victoria Shipyards
Duration
12 days
Norwegian Star underwent an extensive dry dock refurbishment at Victoria Shipyards following the unexpected cancellation of its charter as a floating hotel for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. The project involved major renovations across four fire zones, including the relocation of retail shops, conversion of former retail space into a lounge, and extensive reconfiguration of passenger accommodations and public areas. Work included new suites and staterooms, modifications to Spinnaker Lounge and the aft lounge, improvements to La Cucina restaurant and the art gallery, and conversion of the bell box area. ABB also participated in technical work involving the ship's Azipod propulsion systems. Originally planned for a later shipyard visit, the refurbishment was organized on exceptionally short notice. Norwegian Star moved from dry dock to the pier on February 28, departed Victoria on March 2, and resumed passenger service March 6.
