The R class cruise ships were built between 1998 and 2001 for Renaissance Cruises as a series of eight identical small luxury vessels. They were among the first classes to feature a very high percentage of balcony suites as standard and were designed with an exceptionally intimate scale that allows access to smaller ports and personalized service not possible on larger ships. The ships feature elegant European-inspired interiors with multiple specialty restaurants and a layout optimized for destination immersion with longer port stays and overnight calls. The class was later extensively refurbished and transferred to Azamara Club Cruises and Oceania Cruises, retaining its reputation for refined small-ship cruising that emphasizes cultural and historical ports over mass-market entertainment.

Azamara Journey underwent an approximately $19 million conversion and refurbishment at Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport, transforming the former Pullmantur Blue Dream into an upscale cruise ship for the newly established Azamara Cruises brand. The project converted 48 existing staterooms into 32 larger suites, completely renovated the dining facilities to introduce two specialty restaurants, expanded the spa, and installed new carpeting, exterior decking, bedding, curtains, table linens and other soft furnishings throughout the vessel. Guest accommodations received upgraded bathrooms and furnishings, while public areas were redesigned and the ship's exterior was repainted. ALMACO handled the accommodation conversions, while Danish Interior performed public-area renovations. The ship also received underwater hull painting during its ten-day shipyard visit. Some interior finishing work continued after the vessel departed Freeport, with the conversion completed sufficiently for its inaugural Azamara voyage on May 6, 2007.
