The R class cruise ships were built between 1998 and 2001 for Renaissance Cruises as a series of eight identical small luxury vessels. They were among the first classes to feature a very high percentage of balcony suites as standard and were designed with an exceptionally intimate scale that allows access to smaller ports and personalized service not possible on larger ships. The ships feature elegant European-inspired interiors with multiple specialty restaurants and a layout optimized for destination immersion with longer port stays and overnight calls. The class was later extensively refurbished and transferred to Azamara Club Cruises and Oceania Cruises, retaining its reputation for refined small-ship cruising that emphasizes cultural and historical ports over mass-market entertainment.
