The Voyager class cruise ships were built between 1999 and 2003 for Royal Caribbean International and introduced the revolutionary Royal Promenade and ice-skating rink at sea. Mariner of the Seas underwent a scheduled maintenance and refurbishment dry dock at Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport. The project focused on technical maintenance and general refreshing rather than a major Royal Amplified modernization. Passenger-facing improvements included new private casitas on the pool deck, upgraded sound systems, RFID Wow Band capability, refreshed finishes and minor stateroom updates including new thermostats and motion-activated closet lighting in some cabins.

Mariner of the Seas completed a scheduled dry dock at Navantia Cádiz from February 28 through March 25, 2023. Work included routine maintenance, classification inspections, general hotel upkeep, minor steel repairs, aft-hull cleaning and painting, and propulsion and azipod overhauls. The Sky Pad attraction was removed and its platform was converted into an open activity area for outdoor games and programs.

Mariner of the Seas underwent an approximately $120 million modernization in 2018 that substantially transformed the ship for its new short-cruise deployment. Major additions included Sky Pad, The Perfect Storm racer waterslides, glow-in-the-dark laser tag and Escape Room: The Observatorium. The project also introduced The Bamboo Room, Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade and additional dining and entertainment experiences, together with new accommodations and extensive refurbishment of existing passenger areas.
