Freedom of the Seas underwent a scheduled maintenance and class dry dock at Navantia Cádiz in Spain. Work included technical maintenance and updates, classification inspections, general hotel upkeep, and renewal of carpets, upholstery and tilework. The Deck 5 Vintages wine bar was also converted into Casino Royale Non-Smoking, providing a separate non-smoking casino. The project was primarily a maintenance dry dock rather than a major Royal Amplified refurbishment.

Freedom of the Seas underwent an approximately $116 million Royal Amplified modernization in early 2020. The extensive project introduced a redesigned Caribbean-style pool deck, Splashaway Bay, The Lime & Coconut and The Perfect Storm waterslides. Dining and entertainment additions included Giovanni's Italian Kitchen, El Loco Fresh, Izumi Hibachi & Sushi and Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade. Adventure Ocean and teen spaces were also redesigned, with broader passenger-area, hotel and technical work completed throughout the ship.
