Carnival Triumph underwent a 38-day, approximately $200 million bow-to-stern transformation in Cádiz, Spain, beginning March 1, 2019, emerging as Carnival Sunrise. The extensive project was part of Carnival's fleetwide enhancement program and substantially rebuilt the ship's passenger experience rather than serving as a routine maintenance dry dock.

The transformation introduced or refreshed a broad range of Carnival dining, beverage and entertainment concepts, including Guy's Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, Fahrenheit 555, Cucina del Capitano, Chef's Table, RedFrog Pub, Piano Bar 88 and Limelight Lounge. Recreation and family-area improvements included SportsSquare, WaterWorks, Serenity and upgraded children's and teen spaces, while Cloud 9 Spa was expanded. Accommodations were updated and additional retail and public areas were extensively refurbished before the renamed Carnival Sunrise returned to passenger service in late April 2019.

Carnival Triumph completed a dry dock at Grand Bahama Shipyard that included scheduled technical maintenance and upgrades to accommodations and public spaces. Passenger-area work included new carpeting and other cosmetic improvements, conversion of the former EA SPORTS Bar into SkyBox Sports Bar, conversion of Special Occasions into the Cherry on Top sweets shop, and relocation of the ship's internet café from Deck 4 to Deck 5.

Carnival Sunrise, then operating as Carnival Triumph, underwent extensive emergency repairs at BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards in Mobile, Alabama, following an engine-room fire on February 10, 2013, that disabled the ship's electrical power and propulsion systems in the Gulf of Mexico. The fire originated from a failed flexible fuel-oil return line near diesel generator No. 6, damaging generators, electrical cabling and associated machinery. After being towed to Mobile and disembarking its passengers on February 14, the vessel was transferred to the BAE Systems shipyard on February 15 for damage assessment, mechanical and electrical repairs, and restoration of propulsion capability. On April 3, severe winds caused the ship to break free from its moorings, collide with a dredging vessel and sustain additional exterior damage, further complicating the repair project. Following restoration of sufficient propulsion and electrical systems, Carnival Triumph departed Mobile under its own power on May 8 and proceeded to Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport for final repairs, safety upgrades and the installation of new Fun Ship 2.0 passenger amenities.
