The Arafura class consists of six offshore patrol vessels built for the Royal Australian Navy under Project SEA 1180. Based on the Lürssen OPV80 design and constructed in Australia at the Osborne and Henderson shipyards, the ships replace the Armidale-class patrol boats. They are designed for long-endurance maritime security, fisheries protection, border protection and constabulary operations in Australia’s Exclusive Economic Zone and northern approaches. The class features a modular mission system capable of supporting unmanned aerial systems, multiple rigid-hull inflatable boats launched from side and stern stations, and improved habitability for extended patrols. Primary armament consists of a 25 mm naval gun on a stabilised mount and heavy machine guns.
