Man Overboard Incident on Sun Princess

On August 20, 2025, a tragic incident occurred aboard the Sun Princess, Princess Cruises’ newest and largest vessel, when a crew member went overboard while the ship was sailing through the Dardanelles Strait en route to Istanbul, Turkey. The man overboard alert was issued around 11 PM local time during a 14-night voyage from Barcelona to Athens. The ship, a 177,000-gross-ton Sphere-class vessel with a capacity for 4,300 guests, immediately initiated emergency procedures, turning back to the presumed location and launching rescue boats. At least five Turkish Coast Guard vessels assisted in the search, which continued into the early hours of August 21. Despite extensive efforts, the crew member was not located.

Princess Cruises confirmed the incident in a letter from Captain Craig Street, stating that CCTV footage verified the crew member’s fall. The cruise line expressed deep sadness and extended condolences to the crew member’s family and colleagues. The identity and position of the individual were not disclosed to protect their privacy. The ship was directed to anchor off Tekirdağ, Turkey, for ongoing coordination with authorities, resulting in the cancellation of a scheduled stop in Mykonos and a delayed arrival in Istanbul on August 22.

Princess Cruises provided counseling for passengers and crew, with specially trained counselors available onboard. The incident, the first of its kind on the Sun Princess since its 2024 debut, prompted the cruise line to refund pre-booked Mykonos shore excursions and adjust tour schedules. The event underscores the rarity and gravity of man overboard incidents, with investigations ongoing to determine the circumstances.
