The St. Damian, a classic Ro-Ro car and passenger ferry, is the 20th oldest active cruise ship still in regular passenger service today. Built in 1972 as the Viking 3 for Viking Line, she spent over five decades as a hardworking ferry on Northern European routes before transitioning to Mediterranean ferry-cruise operations. Today she sails under Star Lines, providing reliable transport and short cruise experiences between Italy and Albania, carrying both passengers and vehicles across the Adriatic Sea with the sturdy reliability that has defined her long career.
Constructed in 1972 by Jos. L. Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany (yard number 565), the vessel was originally named Viking 3 and entered service for the Finnish-Swedish Viking Line. She operated on popular routes connecting Finland and Sweden, including the busy Helsinki–Stockholm corridor. As one of the “Papenburg sisters” — a well-known series of nine similar ferries built in the early 1970s — she was designed for high-frequency short-sea crossings, carrying cars, freight, and hundreds of passengers with efficiency and comfort typical of the era’s modern ferry design.
After just a few years with Viking Line she was sold and began a long and varied career under several owners and names. She sailed as Wasa Express, Roslagen, and Ionian Spirit, operating on various Northern European and later Mediterranean ferry routes. Over more than four decades she proved exceptionally durable, undergoing periodic refits and modernizations while maintaining her core Ro-Ro capabilities and reliable performance across changing markets and economic conditions in the European ferry industry.
In 2016 she was renamed St. Damian and began operating the Brindisi (Italy) to Vlora (Albania) route under European Ferries (later Star Lines). With a gross tonnage of 6,748 GT, length of 108.7 meters, and capacity for approximately 1,200 passengers plus 265 cars, she continues to provide essential passenger and vehicle transport across the Adriatic. Multiple updates over the years have kept her systems safe and comfortable while preserving her classic 1970s ferry profile and practical charm that has made her a familiar sight on these routes for many years.
The St. Damian stands as one of the last surviving members of the famous Papenburg sister ships and a testament to the longevity of well-built 1970s European ferries. From her early days linking Finland and Sweden under the Viking Line flag to her current role connecting Italy and Albania, she has safely carried millions of passengers and vehicles across Northern and Southern European waters for more than five decades.
In an era when most vessels of her generation have long since been scrapped, the St. Damian continues to operate as a practical and reliable ferry-cruise hybrid. As the 20th oldest active cruise ship still in regular passenger service, she represents the enduring strength of classic ferry design and the quiet but vital contribution these workhorse vessels make to European connectivity and travel.
