The Serenissima, a classic Norwegian coastal vessel, is one of the most elegant and longest-serving small cruise ships still sailing today. Launched in 1960 as the Harald Jarl for Hurtigruten’s legendary Norwegian Coastal Express, she spent over four decades as a hardworking mail ship and passenger liner along Norway’s dramatic fjord coastline. After a major transformation, she now operates as a refined boutique expedition ship for Noble Caledonia, offering intimate cultural and scenic voyages throughout Europe.
Built by Trondhjems Mekaniske Verksted in Trondheim, Norway, the Harald Jarl was launched in January 1960 and entered service on June 20, 1960, for the Nordenfjeldske Dampskibsselskap (part of the Hurtigruten group). Designed specifically for the challenging Norwegian coastal route, she carried passengers, mail, and cargo between Bergen and Kirkenes year-round, navigating narrow fjords, islands, and Arctic waters with reliability and grace.
For more than 41 years she was a familiar and beloved sight along the Norwegian coast, becoming an integral part of daily life for remote communities. Her elegant profile, comfortable accommodations, and dependable service made her a favorite among both locals and international travelers seeking an authentic Norwegian coastal experience.
In 2002 the Harald Jarl was sold and renamed Andrea. She underwent an extensive multi-million-dollar refurbishment and was chartered exclusively by Noble Caledonia, a British luxury small-ship cruise specialist. During this period she introduced many discerning travelers to the charm of classic coastal cruising in the Mediterranean, Baltic, and other European waters.
In 2012 she was acquired by Premier Cruises Ltd and underwent yet another comprehensive refit. In April 2013 she was renamed Serenissima (Italian for “the most serene”) and began operating full-time under Noble Caledonia’s banner. The ship was carefully modernized while preserving her classic Norwegian lines and country-house-style interiors.
Today the Serenissima carries just 100–118 passengers in an intimate, club-like atmosphere. Operated by Noble Caledonia, she specializes in destination-focused itineraries that emphasize culture, history, and scenery — from the Norwegian fjords and Scottish islands to the Mediterranean, Baltic Sea, and beyond. Multiple refurbishments, most recently in 2018–2019, have kept her fresh while maintaining the warm, elegant character that has defined her for over six decades.
With stabilizers added and modern safety systems installed, she continues to deliver the refined, personalized experience that has made her a favorite among repeat Noble Caledonia guests.
The Serenissima stands as a proud survivor of the golden age of Norwegian coastal shipping. From her decades as a vital Hurtigruten workhorse to her elegant second life as a boutique cruise ship, her story mirrors the evolution of small-ship cruising itself — from practical transport to sophisticated, experience-driven voyages.
Her enduring presence offers travelers a rare chance to sail aboard a genuine piece of maritime history, where classic design meets modern comfort. As one of the oldest active cruise ships still offering regular passenger sailings, the Serenissima reminds us that some vessels — like the serene beauty of the seas they sail — truly stand the test of time.
