The MS Nordstjernen (“North Star”), a classic Norwegian coastal steamer, is one of the most beloved and longest-serving vessels in the history of Hurtigruten. Launched in 1956, she spent 56 continuous years plying the legendary Norwegian Coastal Express route, becoming an icon of everyday Norwegian life and a vital link for remote communities. Today, after a thoughtful transition to heritage and expedition cruising, she continues to sail as a protected national treasure, offering nostalgic voyages and polar adventures that celebrate her remarkable legacy.
Built by the renowned Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Germany, the Nordstjernen was launched on October 26, 1955, and entered service on March 1, 1956, for Det Bergenske Dampskibsselskap (later part of Hurtigruten). Designed specifically for the demanding Norwegian coastal route, she carried passengers, mail, and cargo between Bergen and Kirkenes year-round, navigating the fjords, islands, and Arctic waters that define Norway’s dramatic coastline.
For more than half a century she was a daily lifeline for small coastal communities, where roads and rail were nonexistent. Generations of Norwegians grew up traveling aboard her, and she became synonymous with the Hurtigruten experience — blending practical transport with breathtaking scenery. In the 1980s she received a major modernization that updated her accommodations and systems while carefully preserving her classic lines and elegant interiors.
In March 2012, after 56 years of faithful service, the Nordstjernen was retired from the regular Hurtigruten coastal schedule, having become the oldest operational ship in the fleet and the one with the longest continuous history on the route. She was immediately recognized as a significant piece of Norwegian maritime heritage and granted protected status.
Sold to Vestland Rederi (later M/S Nordstjernen AS), the ship underwent extensive restoration and modernization to prepare her for a new chapter. She was carefully refitted to maintain her historic charm while meeting modern safety and environmental standards, ensuring she could continue sailing for future generations.
Since 2013 the Nordstjernen has operated a variety of special voyages, including nostalgic coastal trips, Svalbard (Spitsbergen) expeditions, and occasional charters. From 2015 to 2024 she was regularly chartered by Hurtigruten for supply and passenger services to Spitsbergen, combining her historic role with modern polar cruising. Today she offers intimate, authentic experiences that capture the spirit of classic Norwegian coastal travel — with the added thrill of sailing under the midnight sun or through Arctic waters.
With her elegant public rooms, traditional wooden interiors, and timeless silhouette, she provides a rare glimpse into the golden age of coastal steamers while delivering the comfort expected by today’s travelers.
The MS Nordstjernen stands as a living monument to Norway’s maritime heritage and the enduring importance of the Hurtigruten coastal service. For more than five decades she was the heartbeat of the Norwegian coast, connecting remote villages and carrying passengers through some of the world’s most spectacular scenery. Her story embodies the resilience, practicality, and beauty of classic Norwegian ship design.
Now protected as national heritage and still actively sailing, the Nordstjernen bridges the past and present of Norwegian seafaring. She reminds us that some ships are more than vessels — they are cultural icons that carry the memories, stories, and identity of a nation. Whether on a nostalgic coastal voyage or an Arctic expedition, sailing aboard the Nordstjernen is a journey through living history under the guiding light of the North Star.
