Aqua Blu Historical Brief

Introduction

The Aqua Blu, a sleek and luxurious expedition yacht, is one of the most unique vessels in the small-ship cruise world. Built in 1968 as a British Royal Navy hydrographic survey ship, she spent over three decades conducting vital oceanographic work before being transformed into a private superyacht and finally into an ultra-luxury explorer for Aqua Expeditions. Today she sails the pristine waters of Indonesia’s Coral Triangle, offering intimate, high-end expeditions to some of the planet’s most biodiverse marine environments.

Early Years: British Royal Navy Explorer (1968–2002)

Constructed in 1968 by Brooke Marine Ltd. in Lowestoft, England, the vessel was commissioned as HMS Beagle, one of the last Royal Navy ships built with traditional wooden decks. She belonged to the Bulldog-class survey vessels and was designed for hydrographic research, mapping the world’s oceans and gathering critical data for navigation and science. For more than 30 years she served with distinction in the Royal Navy, contributing to maritime safety and oceanographic knowledge across the globe. Her sturdy construction and exceptional seaworthiness made her ideally suited for long-range exploratory missions.

Transition to Private Luxury Yacht (2002–2018)

Decommissioned by the Royal Navy in February 2002, HMS Beagle was quickly purchased by a private English couple who recognized her potential as a luxury charter vessel. She underwent a major conversion into an elegant private superyacht and was renamed Titan. Reduced from five decks to four and fitted with 11 luxurious cabins, she became the yacht of choice for a European aristocratic family and select high-end charters. Her broad beam and stable hull proved perfect for comfortable private cruising while retaining her robust naval heritage.

Luxury Expedition Cruise Era with Aqua Expeditions (2019–Present)

In 2018 the yacht was acquired by Aqua Expeditions founder Francesco Galli Zugaro. She underwent an extensive 2018–2019 refit overseen by renowned Dutch yacht designer Cor D. Rover, transforming her into the world-class expedition vessel Aqua Blu. With 15 individually designed suites accommodating just 30 guests and a crew of approximately 30, she offers an ultra-intimate, all-inclusive experience. Permanently based in East Indonesia, she explores the Coral Triangle — including Raja Ampat, Komodo National Park, and the Spice Islands — delivering unparalleled access to remote islands, world-class diving, and pristine marine life.

Legacy and Cultural Significance

The Aqua Blu stands as a remarkable testament to maritime transformation and the enduring appeal of classic naval vessels in modern luxury cruising. From her origins as a pioneering Royal Navy survey ship to her current life as one of the most exclusive expedition yachts in the world, she embodies adaptability, resilience, and the spirit of exploration.

Her story bridges naval history, private yachting, and high-end adventure travel, all while helping showcase one of the planet’s most important marine ecosystems. As one of the oldest active cruise ships still offering regular passenger sailings, the Aqua Blu proves that true luxury at sea comes from character, history, and the thrill of discovery in the world’s most remote and beautiful waters.
