A Mexican Navy tall ship, on a goodwill tour to the United States, collided with the bottom of the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday evening killing two sailors and injuring more than a dozen others, officials said.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said on X early Sunday, two of whom remained in critical condition “and 2 more have sadly passed away from their injuries." Sunday morning the Mexican navy sent out a statement with an updated injury report saying 22 total crew members were injured, including 11 in critical condition and nine in stable condition.

The ship is currently docked at Pier 36 on the Lower East Side as the investigation into what caused the collision with the Brooklyn Bridge continues. Initial reports say the ship lost power and the current in the East River moved the ship in the wrong direction towards the Brooklyn Bridge. Before power could be restored the ship impacted the bridge.
